Two Mini Reviews

4****

The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis came highly recommended, and my expectations were not let down. The story is strange and moved between three teens in their senior year high school. They live in a fairly dull, desolate town, made even more so by a terrible crime that happened there years ago. The main characters, Alex, Jack and Peekay are intriguing and well-developed and the story moved very quickly. It is a disturbing novel, and there are events and themes throughout that make this a difficult read. Nonetheless, I am glad I finally did read it. McGinnis is a talented writer and the story, though tragic, is very compelling.

4****

Four stars also go to The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham. It was my first book by this author, but I enjoyed his writing style and the way he made something very intricate out of a seemingly simple premise, so I will probably look up some of his others. The story revolves around the lives of two pregnant women, Agatha and Meghan. The points of view shift from chapter to chapter and the characters are developed so well, I was never bored, even though the first half of the book is fairly slow paced. So ti was even more shocking when a twist was unveiled, changing just about everything. I won't give away any spoilers, but I was riveted to the very end. Definitely for fans of clever psychological thrillers!
